About Blizzard

Blizzard is a thirteen (!) year old AKC registered Samoyed. She enjoyed spending as much
time outside or playing as possible until the arthritis got too bad. And she definately rules the roost. She thought she wanted a fence
for the yard so that she could stay outside and watch from her perch- until it went in and her view was hindered.

Blizzard's days

When younger D'Bliz spent her days patroling the house, napping on the sofa, and looking out the windows.
Her evenings wee for following us around and playing keep away whenever she got a chance
(usually keep Flurry away from Chris). She also enjoyed tackling Flurry, as long as it is on her terms.
Petting her must also be on her terms, and she'll let you know if you pet her enough or not!
A past issue was her new found fearfulness of thunderstorms.
It's not pleasant to have her lay on your legs at 2:30 a.m. when she jumps on the bed because of them!
She'll give you some dirty looks when you make her get off the bed also!

Another discovery is Blizzard isn't too quick to come in from the rain if no one will open the backdoor for her.
She believes using the doggie door to let herself in and out is beneath her status as #2 in the home.
Since the gates went in to keep the poochies in the lower section of the yard, a wet Bliz has not been a problem.

Blizzard does well with the babies. She keeps away from them for the most part, but she will sniff and
lick occasionally (like when one is crying for too long). She does give me a look as if to say "When are they leaving?" often.
She's glad they leave food on the floor and can't wait to get into the kitchen once they are done eating.
Blizzard is getting old; she has arthritis, hip dysplasia, and it is difficult for her to get up (2006).
2009 update: Blizzard watches the kids warily. She will tolerate Piper"petting" her in exchange for the food P.J. tosses on the floor. She wishes Alyx would stop chasing her, but appreciates that Bailey lets her in when it is too hot outside. Bliz has also been diagnosed with interstitial cystitus, a condition in which she has lost bladder control. It is controlled with medication; good news is the medication is also one she can take for her arthiritis. Bad news is she has taken to laying at the top of the stairs and fussing at 5:15 or so in the morning until I get up and give her the medication. Right now, we do it because we love her.

Sadly, on June 26, 2009, we put Blizzard to rest. The previous Sunday, she developed much more serious trouble walking and moving around. Her left rear leg appeared to be bothering her a lot. As the day went on, she continued to struggle to walk and needed help to get up when laying down and with the stairs.
We took her to the vet Monday morning and left her for a couple of hours so they could get a better look at her. We made the decision to try a different anti-inmflamatory medication and see if that would help her. The other option was an x-ray to see what was going on, but that meant sedating her, and I wanted to avoid that, if possible. So as the week progressed, she did not improve, and she couldn't climb the stairs, and once outside, she couldn't get back to the backdoor from the yard because of the few deck stairs.
We decided to do the x-ray and scheduled that for Thursday morning. Chris dropped her off on his way to work, and we waited for the results. Unfortunately, Blizzard's arthiritis had deteriorated the cartiledge in her knee completely. She was rubbing bone against bone any time she walked, and it was rough bone. The vet described it as looking like a cheese grater. Doc said she could live like that if we wanted to make accomodations for her, but by doing so her right leg would deteriorate faster. Knowing she was in some pain anytime she tried to move hurt both of us. We made the difficult decision to put her down. Chris brought her home Thursday night, and we had one last night and morning with her. We took pictures and videos with her and the kids. It's been tough. Piper had much more of a bond with Blizzard than we knew. She's looking for her every morning and evening. We've put up pictures where she can easily see them so she can wave, smile, and blow kisses to her when she wants to. I'll try to get a few more pictures of her up when I feel up to it.

Favorite Toys

Bliz loves taking any toy and playing keep away with Chris.
The usual problem is Flurry gets in the way, so she then gets body checked and barked at so Bliz can play.
See her defending her man from the attention of other dogs.
Now that Blizzard weighs 58 pounds, she gets to lose some weight. Space to tackle Flurry is more limited
due to all of the baby stuff in the family room, but she's learning to work around it.

Talents

One of Blizzard's talents is singing while we play a harmonica. It may sound pretty
innocent with just one doing it, but try listening to four of them sing together! Not
to mention my husband and father-in-law accompaning them on two harmonicas!

Blizzard's full name is Blizzard Arctic Avalanche, after her dad Sunswept Artic Christmas and mom Avilanche Teddy Bear.
Her mom belongs to my sister-in-law Kim. Several of the pups have names that are arctic in nature
(Tondra, Manitoba, Ice Chip, Snow Mist).

Blizzard's birthday is June 14, 1996. She remains on light food since her weight is up (not good for her arthritis).

Almost all of Blizzard's siblings belong to family or close friends- my mother-in-law kept one,
my sister-in-law Traci has one, and close family friends got 2 of the other pups.
